Maths Grinds Carlow

Carlow Town is dominated by the presence of SETU, which changes the local picture in a way that is easy to miss. There are maths-capable people in the town, but most of them are teaching or studying at third level rather than taking Leaving Cert students, so the apparent supply is larger than the real one.

Students in Tullow, Bagenalstown, Borris and Hacketstown are twenty to thirty minutes from the town and in practice have very little locally. Carlow also sits close enough to Kilkenny and Wexford that families sometimes look across the county line, which adds travel without adding much choice.

The SETU connection does shape ambitions. A good number of Carlow students are aiming at engineering, computing and science courses there, all of which have a maths requirement. Holding Higher Level is usually the whole objective.
