Maths Grinds Roscommon

Roscommon students are spread across a long, thin county with no large town in it. Roscommon Town, Boyle and Castlerea are each small enough that the number of maths teachers taking grinds locally can be counted on one hand, and in a given year that number is sometimes zero.

Get in touch

This is the real problem in Roscommon, and it has nothing to do with ability. A student in Castlerea who needs help with Higher Level calculus is not choosing between tutors, they are hoping one exists within driving distance. If the nearest specialist is in Galway or Athlone, that is an hour each way on a school night, which usually means it does not happen at all.

Online removes the geography from the problem entirely. The practical objection used to be connectivity, and that argument has largely expired: Roscommon now has fibre coverage in the low nineties of a percent, so a video session with a shared whiteboard works from most of the county without drama.

Students in the south of the county around Athlone have more options, since the town straddles the Westmeath border and draws tutors from both sides. North Roscommon has far less, and those are the students for whom this makes the biggest difference.
